Familiars are not cosmetic pets — they run your Spinner, cut Workbench craft times, and turn a lonely sanctum into an automated base. The catch is that not every enemy can be tamed. You need to read death animations, grab lingering Spirits before they vanish, and invest in the right Luminary node to stop wasting kills. This guide covers the full bond loop from first capture through station assignment. If you already hunt souls with incense, pair this with our Familiar Hunting & Incense guide; for which familiars to prioritize after you bond them, see the Familiar Tier List.

The Goal: Get Familiars, Automate Your Base

Familiars are your workforce. They operate facilities, boost production, and automate resource gathering. A packed menagerie means faster crafting and stronger defenses. The system clicks once you learn the visual cues and know which Luminary skill to prioritize.

Familiars assigned to a Workbench or Spinner station can cut craft time by up to 50% — see station requirements in the Hearth database.

How to Get a Familiar (Step-by-Step)

1. Spot the Bondable Enemies

Witchspire bondable enemy — Spirit rising after a kill

This is the make-or-break step. After you kill a creature, watch its death animation. If it releases a glowing, translucent Spirit that floats up and hangs in the air for a few seconds, it is bondable.

Froblin Grunts and other standard mobs without a Spirit release are dead weight for bonding — do not waste time on enemies that never leave a Spirit. Focus on fauna listed in the Familiars database and cross-reference our Familiar Tier List so you bond useful station unlocks first.

2. Form the Bond

When you kill a bondable enemy, there is a chance the Spirit stays on the ground instead of vanishing. It hovers near the corpse. Walk up and interact with it (default: E on PC). The bond is permanent unless you release the familiar later. The spirit goes straight to your inventory or active roster.

Do not sprint away after the kill. If the Spirit spawns, you must reach it before the animation ends.

3. Pump Up Your Success Rate

The base chance for a Spirit to stick around is roughly 30–40%. That is painful if you want a full workforce early.

Unlock Spirit Charmer in the Luminaries skill tree. Each rank raises Spirit retention. At max rank you are looking at roughly 90% success. Prioritize this node if you plan to farm multiple familiars in one session — our Recommended Luminaries guide explains where it sits relative to Pickaxe, Sickle, and other must-have unlocks.

Tips & Fixes

What to Do with Familiars

Familiars are not trophies. Assign them to facilities like the Spinner to auto-operate production. At the Workbench or any unlocked station, a familiar cuts crafting time by up to 50%.

You can assign multiple familiars to different stations, but one familiar = one facility at a time — no multitasking. For which familiars unlock which benches, use the Familiar Tier List; for incense-heavy farming sessions, stack buffs from Familiar Hunting & Incense.

Common Problems

No Spirit appears — You may not have Spirit Charmer yet, or RNG simply failed. Reloading the area will not retroactively fix a missed roll; kill another of the same enemy type.

Familiar not working — Check that the facility is powered and the familiar is not already assigned elsewhere. Familiars have a stamina bar; when it is empty they stop. Park them at a Resting Post to recharge.

Best Farming Spots

For labeled regions and clickable spawn anchors, use our Maps hub. Early loops that work well in the current EA build:

  • Vyrs & Alderwood (Map 1)Rockling Den and Chirili Crater routes; short respawns and beginner-friendly bond targets.
  • Shard Caverns (Map 3)Shardling and Shudder near cavern entrances; pair with the Timberline Basin walkthrough when you unlock the region.
  • The Shuddersands (Map 5) — higher risk desert fauna; save deep runs until your gear and Spirit Charmer ranks are online.

Avoid overextending into late biomes before you can survive the damage spike — lower bond efficiency per hour if you spend half the run healing.

TL;DR

Kill bondable enemies and grab their Spirit before it fades. Invest in Spirit Charmer through the Luminaries tree. Assign familiars to Hearth stations. Let the base run itself.

Wrapping up

Bonding is a visual skill: watch for the floating Spirit, interact before it fades, and unlock Spirit Charmer before you grind a full roster. Assign every useful catch to a facility — one familiar per station — and cross-check spawn locations on our Maps page or in the Familiars database. When you are ready to raise retention rates through the skill tree, continue with Recommended Luminaries.
